There are many likely nominees in the running for Nobel Peace Prizes, such as Pope Francis, Edward Snowden, and Greek Islanders assisting migrants washing up on shore – however, one name stands out above them all; Donald Trump.
The list of official nominees for the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize is a tightly guarded secret, with nominations for the award required to be posted to Nobel Institute in Norway by February 1, with the catch being that individuals that nominate a candidate are at liberty to reveal the name of the person they’ve proposed for the award.
According to Nobel watcher Kristian Berg Harpviken, the director of the Peace Research Institute of Oslo, U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump has been nominated for the prestigious prize.
Harpviken said he had received a copy of a nomination letter for Trump – whose proposal to ban Muslim immigration to the United States has attracted international condemnation – that claims he deserves the Nobel prize for “his vigorous peace through strength ideology, used as a threat weapon of deterrence against radical Islam, ISIS, nuclear Iran and Communist China.”
Nominations are made by thousands of elites across the globe, including university professors, former laureates, members of parliament/congress and government ministers. The Nobel Institute is required to accept all valid nominations, but simply being nominated isn’t indicative of acceptance.
In addition to the current nominees, the five members of the panel that selects the Nobel Prize laureate are also allowed to put forth their own nominations upon holding their first meeting on Feb. 29.
Edward Snowden, the U.S. whistleblower who exposed mass surveillance by the National Security Agency, could be a likely winner, according to Harpviken.

“Snowden’s leaks led to a good number of reforms in US practice and US legislation, which make it harder to still argue that he is a traitor to his country,” Harpviken told Agence France-Press.
While correct about Snowden not being a traitor, Harpviken is mistaken about there being any substantial reforms in U.S. global spying apparatus. The aforementioned spying has actually become even more entrenched within the U.S. system since the revelations by Snowden, and further legitimized under the law due to subsequent legislation passed by the U.S. Congress.
It seems unlikely that Trump will win the Nobel Peace Prize, but considering President Barack Obama aka “The King of Drones” won the award; anything is possible.
