A Utah-based essential oils company pleaded guilty to illegally trafficking therapeutic oils from Peru and Nepal.

The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/2xeOjvI ) the U.S. Department of Justice says Lehi-based Young Living Essential Oils must pay $760,000 and develop a plan to track compliance.

The company reported its own missteps to the government after hiring an outside investigator in 2015. The probe found the company exported rosewood oil from Peru and spikenard oil from Nepal without proper permits for harvesting endangered plants.

A spokeswoman for Young Living says the company did not live up to its standards and has since overhauled its compliance program to prevent future mistakes and honor federal law. She says the company learned about a situation identified by its compliance program in 2014 and immediately began the probe.
